A Candy Tax in California?
Candy and other snacks have been tax-free in California since 1992, according to The Mercury News.
Assemblywomen Cristina Garcia, whose bill to exempt tampons and other feminine products last year was vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown, has determined to change the tax-free status of candy.
I think manufacturers and lawmakers are going to fight over the definition of candy to decide whether it could be classified as food or not. Certainly sales taxes from candy purchases will increase state revenues, but are we really need to go that direction while other steps can be taken to increase state revenue.
